We tested Beehiiv the way three different newsletter operators would use it: a solo creator building a weekly newsletter with monetization goals, a media company running a daily newsletter with sponsor placements, and a community focused publication that combines newsletters with member discussion. The 30 percent revenue share means Beehiiv retained approximately $48 per edition, with creators keeping $112. The premium subscription tools are functional but lack the advanced features of membership platforms like Memberful or Patreon.

Beehiiv's analytics are its most underrated feature. The analytics dashboard provides a level of detail that surpasses Substack, Kit, and most email marketing platforms for newsletter specific metrics. The subscriber growth breakdown by acquisition source is particularly valuable: you can see exactly which channels are driving growth and optimize accordingly.

Engagement scoring per subscriber is a powerful tool for audience management. Each subscriber gets an engagement score based on recency and frequency of opens and clicks. Low engagement subscribers can be segmented for re engagement campaigns. High engagement subscribers can be identified as potential power readers. The scoring system is simple (0 to 100 scale) but effective for prioritizing audience management efforts.

Content performance analytics show open rates, click through rates, and engagement per individual post. Comparative analytics show how each post performs against your publication average. The data is presented clearly with visual charts and exportable reports. The analytics are designed for newsletter operators who want to optimize content strategy based on performance data.

The analytics have limitations. Historical data is limited to 12 months on the Scale plan. Custom report building is not available. Media companies and independent publishers that run multiple newsletters or operate sponsor supported content models will appreciate the Ad Network, audience analytics, and cross publication growth tools. Beehiiv's enterprise features support team publishing workflows with multiple contributors and editorial calendars.

Newsletter operators who value data driven decision making will find the analytics depth valuable. The ability to track subscriber growth by source, engagement scores per subscriber, and content performance per post enables continuous optimization of content and growth strategies.

Creators who are migrating from Substack or Kit and want more control over growth and monetization will find Beehiiv provides the tools they outgrew on simpler platforms. The migration tools support importing subscribers and content from Substack, Kit, Mailchimp, and other platforms with minimal friction.

Casual newsletter writers who send occasional updates and do not need growth tools or monetization should choose Substack or Kit. The simplicity and zero upfront cost of Substack is better for hobbyist creators. The free plan limitations on Beehiiv (2,500 subscriber cap, platform branding) make it a poor fit for casual use.

Budget conscious creators who cannot justify $39 to $99 per month for a newsletter platform will find better value in Kit's Creator plan at $29 per month or MailerLite's growing business plan at $10 per month. The free plan on Substack (unlimited subscribers, no branding) is also more attractive for cost sensitive creators.

Teams that need advanced email marketing automation with conditional workflows, lead scoring, and multi step sequences should choose ActiveCampaign or Kit. Beehiiv's automation is basic and focused on newsletter specific triggers (welcome series, post publish sequences). It is not designed for complex marketing automation.

Businesses that need ecommerce email marketing with product recommendations, abandoned cart automation, and purchase data integration should choose Mailchimp, Klaviyo, or Kit. Beehiiv is a newsletter publishing platform, not an email marketing platform, and lacks the ecommerce features that online businesses need.
