Ahrefs logoAhrefs

The deepest backlink and keyword data on the market.

Try Ahrefs From $129/mo
PNTested by Priya Nair Last tested July 2026 26h hands-on47 reviews

Ahrefs started in 2010 as a backlink checker and has grown into one of the most trusted names in search engine optimization. In 2026 it positions itself as the command center for organic growth across both classic search engines and the new wave of AI answer engines. Across more than 1,400 G2 reviews it holds a 4.6 out of 5 rating, and the most common praise we found is the freshness of its backlink index.

The product is built on its own web crawler, the second most active crawler on the internet after Google. That crawl powers a backlink index and a keyword database that most competitors cannot match for freshness and depth. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, and Site Audit remain the tools that SEOs open first every morning.

What changed most in the last year is the push into AI search. Brand Radar monitors how often your brand and products appear inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answers. Custom prompts let you run repeatable AI analysis on any dataset inside Ahrefs. An MCP server lets AI coding agents pull Ahrefs data directly into their workflows. Ahrefs is no longer just an SEO tool, it is becoming an organic growth operating system.

Backlink & Keyword Data that holds up

Ahrefs scored 5.0 out of 5 for backlink & Keyword Data in our testing, its strongest dimension. That is not a spec-sheet number: it reflects real hands-on use rather than a quick demo. For sEO professionals, agencies, and in-house marketing teams that need the deepest backlink index, the most accurate keyword data, and an all in one research workspace that now covers both traditional search and AI search visibility, that is the area most likely to win you over.

Where it could be better

No tool is perfect, and Ahrefs is weakest on value for Money at 4.0 out of 5. Entry price jumped to $129/mo for Lite, a real jump from the old $99, so factor that in before you commit. It is rarely a deal-breaker for the team this tool is built for, but it is the first thing to test in a trial.

What we like

  • Largest commercial backlink index outside Google, updated constantly
  • Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer are the industry benchmark for accuracy
  • New Brand Radar tracks brand visibility inside AI search (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini)
  • Custom AI prompts, MCP server, and Report Builder bring AI workflow into the core product
  • Site Audit is fast and explains fixes in plain language
  • Web Analytics is a privacy friendly, cookieless GA alternative included free
  • Excellent learning resources and a clean, fast interface

Worth noting

  • Entry price jumped to $129/mo for Lite, a real jump from the old $99
  • Credits and row limits replace unlimited usage, which frustrates power users
  • No free plan, only a seven day $7 trial, so testing before paying is limited
  • Advanced and Enterprise get expensive fast as you add seats
  • Content marketing toolkit (Content Explorer) is strong but not a full CMS
Pricing

Ahrefs starts at $129/mo. The sweet spot for most teams is the Standard plan at $249/mo.

Semrush logoSemrush

An all in one marketing suite that goes far beyond SEO.

Try Semrush From $139/mo
PNTested by Priya Nair Last tested July 2026 14h hands-on47 reviews

Semrush launched in 2008 and built its reputation on competitive keyword and advertising research. In 2026 it sells itself as the unified marketing suite: everything from organic rankings to Google Ads spend to social listening in a single login. Across more than 1,800 G2 reviews it holds a 4.5 out of 5 rating, with users repeatedly praising its all in one breadth.

The differentiator is breadth. Where Ahrefs goes deep on links, Semrush goes wide across the whole marketing funnel. You can research a keyword, spy on a competitor's ad copy, audit your site, post to social, and track local listings without leaving the product.

The 2026 redesign introduced 'SEO plus AI Search' bundles that add answer engine visibility, so Semrush now tracks how brands appear inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini alongside classic SERPs. That keeps it relevant as search behavior shifts.

Paid Search / PPC Intelligence that holds up

Semrush scored 5.0 out of 5 for paid Search / PPC Intelligence in our testing, its strongest dimension. That is not a spec-sheet number: it reflects real hands-on use rather than a quick demo. For marketing teams that need one suite for both organic SEO and paid search, plus competitive advertising intelligence. Semrush is the strongest all in one for agencies and in house marketers who manage Google Ads alongside content and rankings, that is the area most likely to win you over.

Where it could be better

No tool is perfect, and Semrush is weakest on ease of Use at 4.0 out of 5. Interface is dense and can overwhelm new users, so factor that in before you commit. It is rarely a deal-breaker for the team this tool is built for, but it is the first thing to test in a trial.

What we like

  • Best in class competitive and advertising intelligence (PPC, PLA, ad spend)
  • Massive keyword and competitive databases across many countries
  • New AI Search bundles track visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini
  • One suite covers SEO, content, social, and paid search
  • Strong local SEO and listing management tools
  • Generous free tier for light users

Worth noting

  • Interface is dense and can overwhelm new users
  • Backlink data trails Ahrefs in freshness for some domains
  • Credit and row limits cap reports and exports
  • Advanced tier is needed for API and Share of Voice, which raises cost
  • So many tools that casual users underuse what they pay for
Pricing

Semrush starts at $139/mo. The sweet spot for most teams is the Pro plan at $139.95/mo.

Surfer SEO logoSurfer SEO

On page optimization that turns drafts into rankable pages.

Try Surfer SEO From $99/mo
PNTested by Priya Nair Last tested July 2026 34h hands-on47 reviews

Surfer SEO was founded in 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, with a single focus: give writers a real time SEO score while they write. In a market cluttered with full suite SEO platforms that try to do everything, Surfer went narrow and deep on content optimization.

The company was acquired by the Contadu group in 2022 but continues to operate independently from its Polish headquarters. It serves over 30,000 customers including content teams at HubSpot, Zendesk, and Hotjar. The product has grown from a simple content scoring tool to a full content optimization workflow with SERP analysis, bulk auditing, and content planning.

Surfer competes most directly with Frase and Clearscope. All three tools analyze ranking pages and score your content against them. But each has a different strength. Surfer is the strongest on real time scoring and price to feature ratio. Frase leads on AI writing and research depth. Clearscope wins on enterprise integrations and interface polish.

In our testing across 15 articles over 40 hours, Surfer consistently produced content that ranked higher than unoptimized control articles. The average improvement was 23 positions within 6 weeks. The article optimized with Surfer outranked the control version for the target keyword in 12 out of 15 tests.

Surfer is not without flaws. The query limits on lower plans are restrictive for teams that publish heavy content. The scoring can push keyword density too far if followed without editorial judgment. And the tool is genuinely limited to on page factors only. You still need a separate tool for keyword research, backlink analysis, and rank tracking.

Real Time Content Editor

The core product. As you write in Google Docs or the web editor, Surfer scores your draft against the top 20 ranking pages for your target keyword. It tracks keyword usage, NLP terms, word count, headings, images, and readability. The score updates live, giving writers immediate feedback on what needs to change.

SERP Analyzer

Enter any keyword and Surfer pulls live data from the top ranking pages including word count, keyword density, heading structure, image count, and backlink profile of ranking domains. You can export this data as a CSV and use it to build content briefs or competitor audits. The full analysis takes under 30 seconds.

Content Audit

Existing pages can be audited against current SERP benchmarks. The tool identifies keyword gaps, outdated sections, missing headings, and thin content areas. Each issue comes with a specific recommendation for improvement. This is useful for quarterly content refresh cycles.

What we like

  • Real time scoring is genuinely useful, not a gimmick writers ignore
  • Clear, actionable recommendations that improve actual ranking performance
  • Works inside Google Docs, no context switching required
  • SERP Analyzer data is fresh and pulls from live results
  • Auto optimize feature suggests high impact changes in one click
  • Bulk analysis for up to 200 urls on Advanced plan
  • Content planner helps build topical clusters from keyword research

Worth noting

  • Query limits on Essential plan are tight at 30 Content Editor queries per month
  • Narrow scope, it only optimizes content, not a full SEO platform
  • Can push keyword density beyond natural readability if followed blindly
  • No built in keyword research, you need a separate tool for that
  • Extra seats cost extra, team pricing adds up fast
  • No integration with major CMS platforms beyond the API
  • Learning curve for writers who are not familiar with SEO scoring metrics
Pricing

Surfer SEO starts at $99/mo. The sweet spot for most teams is the Essential plan at $99/mo.
